park branch library
A complete overhaul of a dated and dilapidated branch library in Carmel-by-the-Sea, the Park Branch Library is a complete reimagining of an existing building for a new generation of library users. The building was originally constructed as a grocery store, repurposed as a bank, and then awkwardly converted to a library. The exterior is completed transformed through the use of shou sugi ban siding, and the re-orientation of windows and the main entry. An existing truss structure, previously concealed underneath ceiling tiles, has been exposed and a large vaulted volume created for the expansive children’s area. At the perimeter of the building a narrow and poorly organized parking lot that circled the building has been transformed into a lush and generous entry plaza and children’s garden.
