HEARN library
A new library for the City of Santa Rosa, the Hearn Library is part of a large community development including a fire station and future recreation center. The building is inspired by the agricultural history of the region, specifically the vernacular forms of working farms. A simple palette of corrugated metal and white wood siding makes for a contemporary take on this familiar form. The concept of a grain silo is used as inspiration for a sculptural tower connected to the children’s area, creating a special place for inspiration and play. The building is complimented by a children’s garden designed with natural play structures including a large smooth log, and complimented by native plantings. The south side of the library looks out on a community plaza that includes a large event lawn, a social gathering stair, and an expansive covered “porch”. The project emphasizes indoor outdoor connection, with views out to the native landscape from all spaces within the building, and daylight flooding in from outside.
