Harrison memorial library
Designed in 1927 by renowned architect Bernard Maybeck, the Harrison Memorial Library is a beloved library in the coastal community of Carmel-by-the-Sea. While the original design is stunning, in particular the grand reading room with a vaulted ceiling and mezzanine overlook, like all buildings approaching 100 years old it is showing its age. In addition to issues with infrastructure such as power and internet connectivity, the small footprint of the library was dispersed over 6 levels, making the building extremely difficult to navigate for those with mobility challenges. Our design artfully integrates a new elevator and reorganized vertical circulation into the core of the building, while maintaining the key original spatial components and keeping the Maybeck’s design intent intact. Unfortunate lighting and finish choices added over the years have been removed, and replaced with thoughtful selections that restore the library to its former glory.
