Aptos library
Developed as part of a Design Build competition, the Aptos Library is a 12,000sf new civic facility in Santa Cruz County. Located a short distance from the at time peaceful, and at other times turbulent, ocean of Monterey Bay, as well as the nearby soaring conifers of Nisense Marks State Park, the building is designed a honor this intersection of Forrest and ocean. Weathered wood exteriors represent the windswept seaside, and warm cedar interiors with green accents are a nod to the deep and vibrant woods. Carefully placed metal accents honor the industrial history of the Town of Aptos, and the former logging town of Loma Preita and the railroad that supported it. The library takes two very simple gabled forms and creates a dynamic spatial relationship at the intersection of each wing of the building, creating a welcoming entry plaza and delightful children’s garden. The library is a representation of the community of Aptos and the surrounding natural environment.
